Book Synopsis: "Sincerely Mary" is a delightful collection of columns written by Mary Lee Shannon, the owner and editor of the small town Texas newspaper, the Wharton Spectator, during the 1950’s. She editorialized in an era that a person could speak their mind clearly and without the filter of political correctness. She said exactly what she meant. For this reason, her writing provoked an immediate response. Issue by issue, the reader was either touched by her sincere compassion or was enraged by her politics. Her writing was not the frivolous voice of an uninformed debutante, to the contrary, hers was the rational voice of Mid-Century America before politics and radical idealism took hold. The book is lovingly compiled and edited by her daughter-in-law, author, Pat Shannon. |

Author Biography:
![]() Pat Shannon was born and bred in Newgulf, Texas in the early 1930’s. At that time, Newgulf was a small town that was shielded from the rest of the world and, according to Pat, "believe me we knew it, but truly it was a great place for growing up." She graduated from Boling High School and then also from Wharton County Junior College. Pat married Frank Shannon, Jr. in 1951 and had two sons, Frank III and Paul. "We didn’t have much money, but our love for each other held us together," said Pat, who now lives in the old homestead with "Chica" her tabby cat, and is thrilled to finally have this work in print. "Although I am not a writer, I am ecstatic to be embarking on this new literary career. At age 75, this project has been one of the highlights of my life!" |
